Outdoor Education is taught from Foundation to Grade 6 for one hour each week and provides students with rich, hands-on learning experiences beyond the classroom. The program is structured across the year to develop a broad range of skills and understandings.
Outdoor Education in the early years focuses on building personal safety, teamwork, environmental awareness, and confidence through hands-on, active learning experiences.
Term 1 – Personal Health & CollaborationStudents develop foundational personal health habits and cooperative skills. A strong emphasis is placed on SunSmart practices, safe participation outdoors, and positive behaviours. Through structured cooperative games and team challenges, students build communication skills, sportsmanship, and confidence in working with others.
Term 2 – Environment & Active SafetyStudents learn about bush safety, safe use of playground spaces, and responsible behaviour in outdoor environments. Guided bush walks and clean-up activities promote environmental awareness and care for community spaces. Students also participate in Scooter Education, developing balance, control, and safe riding behaviours while learning to follow rules and boundaries.
Term 3 – Intercultural Capability & SustainabilityStudents explore Traditional Indigenous Games and develop an understanding of Connection to Land, building respect for Australia’s cultural heritage. Learning extends into sustainability and biology through composting, investigating mini beasts, and caring for the vegetable garden. These hands-on experiences foster environmental responsibility and curiosity about living systems.
Term 4 – Outdoor RecreationStudents apply their learning through active Outdoor Recreation experiences. A focus on Water Safety helps students understand safe behaviours around aquatic environments. Structured outdoor games build teamwork, resilience, and confidence while encouraging enjoyment of physical activity in a supportive setting.
In Grades 3 and 4, Outdoor Education builds on foundational skills and encourages students to take greater responsibility for their safety, teamwork, and understanding of the natural world. Learning becomes more skill-based, inquiry-driven, and reflective.
Term 1 – Personal Health & CollaborationStudents revisit and strengthen SunSmart practices, developing independence in managing their personal health and safety outdoors. Through structured team-building activities and group challenges, students build communication skills, resilience, leadership, and cooperation. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving, positive sportsmanship, and contributing effectively to a team.
Term 2 – Bike EducationStudents participate in a structured Bike Education program focused on skill development and road safety awareness. They practise bike control, braking, signalling, and navigating obstacles while learning the rules and responsibilities of safe riding. Students build confidence, spatial awareness, and decision-making skills in controlled and real-world scenarios.
Term 3 – Science & EnvironmentStudents explore sustainability and environmental responsibility through a focus on recycling practices and reducing waste. Learning extends into Biology, where students investigate plants and animals, habitats, and the role living things play within ecosystems.
Students also develop practical outdoor skills through Bush Safety, learning to assess risks and make safe decisions in natural environments. These experiences strengthen environmental awareness and encourage students to take responsibility for caring for the spaces they use.
Term 4 – Outdoor Recreation & Intercultural UnderstandingStudents apply their learning through engaging Outdoor Recreation experiences. A continued focus on Water Safety supports students in recognising hazards and practising responsible behaviour near aquatic environments. Outdoor games and introductory camping skills promote teamwork, resilience, independence, and problem-solving.
Students also explore Traditional Indigenous Games and sustainable practices, deepening their understanding of cultural perspectives and environmental responsibility. These experiences foster respect for diversity and encourage students to reflect on their connection to the outdoors and their role in caring for it.
In Grades 5 and 6, Outdoor Education focuses on leadership, responsibility, and applying skills in more complex and real-world contexts. Students are encouraged to take initiative, demonstrate resilience, and act as positive role models within outdoor environments.
Term 1 – Personal Health & CollaborationStudents strengthen their independence in managing personal health and safety, with a continued focus on SunSmart practices and responsible participation outdoors. Through structured team-building challenges and leadership activities, students develop communication, cooperation, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Emphasis is placed on initiative, accountability, and contributing positively to group success.
Term 2 – Bike EducationStudents participate in an advanced Bike Education program that builds on prior skills and focuses on safe riding in more complex environments. They refine braking, signalling, hazard awareness, and group riding techniques while developing a strong understanding of road rules and shared pathway responsibilities. The program promotes confidence, independence, and safe decision-making.
Term 3 – Science, Geography & Outdoor SkillsStudents investigate Sustainability with a focus on water, exploring conservation, human impact, and responsible use of natural resources. Learning extends into Biology, where students examine ecosystems, interdependence, and the relationships between living and non-living elements within environments.
Students also develop practical outdoor skills through Orienteering, building navigation, map-reading, and spatial awareness skills in real-world settings. Through Photography, students document environmental features and reflect on human impact and natural systems. These experiences strengthen geographical understanding and environmental responsibility.
Term 4 – Outdoor Recreation, Safety & Intercultural UnderstandingStudents apply their learning through engaging Outdoor Recreation experiences, including outdoor games and camping activities that promote teamwork, resilience, and leadership. A strong focus on Water Safety reinforces hazard awareness and responsible behaviour around aquatic environments.
Students are introduced to foundational First Aid skills, learning how to respond calmly and appropriately in basic emergency situations. This builds confidence, responsibility, and practical life skills.
Students also explore Traditional Indigenous Games, strengthening their understanding of cultural perspectives and respect for Australia’s rich heritage. These experiences promote inclusion, appreciation of diversity, and reflection on their connection to the outdoors.
